The British Columbia government has extended the deadline for short-term rental platforms like Airbnb and VRBO to confirm that their listings comply with provincial regulations.
While rental hosts still need to register their units by May 1, platforms now have until June 1 to ensure that each listing includes a valid registration number. Listings without a number must be removed by June 2.
In addition, platforms have been granted until June 23 to cancel any future bookings for unregistered listings or face potential investigation and penalties.
The decision comes after industry stakeholders requested more time to finalize technical systems that validate registration numbers. The province acknowledged these concerns and allowed the extension to support smoother implementation and coordination.
This move reflects the province’s willingness to work collaboratively with digital rental platforms to ensure compliance while maintaining the flexibility needed for technical adjustments. It gives companies like Airbnb a realistic timeframe to adapt to new policies without compromising service for users or hosts.
